History: Settled in 1850, incorporated in 1858, the city was originally named Uniontown and was the county seat in the late 1800's before the honor shifted to Eureka.
Today: Arcata is the home of Humboldt State University and is well known for it's wetlands area. Just south of town, this protected area is a spot for many unique migrating birds.
